Workshop in Progress - February 23, 2011

It's Wednesday so it must be time to play
Workshop in Progress!
I have been collecting fabric for a couple of weeks for a new quilt.
I went to my LQS, my not so LQS,
and to large fabric chain store.
Large fabric chain store shall go un-named for reasons sited below.

I usually don't buy fabric at rather large fabric chain store,
but they had some things I don't see other places,
so I gave it a whirl.
I bought quarter yards.

I never have a plan. I just jump in.
I started cutting up all those lovely quarter yards into 4 1/2" squares.
That should work right? 9" is a quarter yard . . .
My LQS always cut a little extra . . .
Their fabric was fine.

It was rather large fabric chain store that disappointed.
Most of the fabric was cut at 8" and not very straightly!

But . . . this could work for me. I cut the leftover from the quarters at 4 1/2" x 2 1/2"
and then pieced them into the squares.
Not sure what I'm going to do next, but it's all cut and ready to be something.
How do you approach a new project?
Do you plan it all out and know exactly where you are going?

Or do you just jump into a whirl of cutting and sewing and see what happens?

Today, Cheryl asked us what we do for thread storage.
I have two racks that sit on top of my fabric bookcase.
I try to keep same colors together.

Bobbins are stored on this little magnetic rack so they don't roll around.
Some are in the sewing box right behind it.
I don't keep the spool and the bobbin together.
So that's what's cooking today.
What are you working on today?

  1. The clerks at my big chain fabric store are very sloppy cutters. The LQS closed so big chain is the only option locally. I try to buy most of my fabric online.

  2. Approaching a new project. I'm kinda hyper so I usually have at least a general sense of what I want and where I'm going. Maybe a rough sketch on some paper. Then I try to figure how to correct my math mistakes and boo boos. LOL But my favorite part is making blocks and then fooling around on my design wall. I also seem to have a limited attention span so fooling around makes for lots of options and choices til the deadline actually sends me into a flurry of sewing it together. I find I need lots of stimulous to keep me interested in the whole project or else I will start a new one. I actually have a lot of old ones. LOL

  4. Lovely new fabrics but bummer about the short cuts. I'm usually afraid to buy quarter yards for that reason. I like how some quilt shops cut with a ruler and rotary cutter. Seems to work out better/straighter for the quilter. Looking forward to see what develops from your new purchases.

  5. your bobbins are so well organized! i have 2, maybe 3 bobbins wound at any one time, including the one in the machine! I'm so bad at being prepared with that... thanks for the inspiration, i might have to go wind some more now..

  6. I love your rainbow of threads! How do those of you who store bobbins separately know which bobbin goes with which thread??

I generally have a plan before I tackle a new project - my favourite part is pulling fabrics!

  7. I love the new quilt. Call the Quilter's Alley before you come over.

  8. Love all the fabric you have choosen.
I generally have a bit of a plan but it is never set in stone and things usually evolve while I'm working on something.
